Alabama News Center – Breakthrough Series practices at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama: The Alabama Weather Blog

By: Solomon Crenshaw Jr.

Jerry Manuel sat in the visitors’ dugout at Rickwood Field, taking a break from testing young men in the batting cage.

The 70-year-old is a former Major League Baseball player and later managed the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. But why is the 2000 American League Manager of the Year still giving young men tips on the fine art of baseball hitting?

“Because I have a gift for teaching,” Manuel said. “I believe my gift is to develop the young black player and to impart to him everything I’ve learned to make the game as a whole better, not just for black people, but for the game as a whole. That’s my calling.”
