In Idaho and across the country, the Fourth of July is just days away. This is the time when Americans, young and old, come together to celebrate our country’s independence with parades, barbecues and impressive fireworks displays – a true testament to our patriotism.

Some people can take a long weekend or the whole week off. It’s fireworks season in Idaho, and villages with tents selling fireworks have sprung up all over our favorite shopping districts and street markets.

In Idaho, several cities host fireworks displays after dark on the Fourth of July. But which Idaho city can lay claim to having the largest fireworks display in the state? The giant fireworks display and the largest fireworks display west of the Mississippi.
Most Idahoans would guess big cities like Boise, Nampa or Meridian. However, the city with the biggest fireworks display west of the Mississippi is Idaho Falls, Idaho. Every year, Americans from Idaho, Utah and several other states make the pilgrimage to Idaho Falls for the 31st annual Melaleuca Freedom Celebration.
The number of explosives in the sky is impressive. From a press release from Melaleuca:
“Measured by the sheer number of shells fired into the sky, the 31st annual Melaleuca Freedom Celebration is considered one of the top five Independence Day fireworks displays in the country. This free tribute to America averages 597 shells fired per minute! That’s 9.9 fireworks per second! And it typically draws over 200,000 spectators.”
The additional people make the Idaho Falls area one of the most densely populated areas in the state.
Frank VanderSloot, Executive Chairman of Melaleuca, shared his thoughts on why this local Idaho company is spending so much money to celebrate America in Idaho.
“The Melaleuca Freedom Celebration is more than just Fourth of July entertainment. The combination of fireworks, music and message creates magical moments of reflection and an opportunity to renew allegiance to the flag that represents our nation. On another level, it is a heartfelt, unifying event for the community – but more importantly, it is a tribute to America’s heroes.”
