Former high school star from Alabama starts in the MLB All-Star Game

Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles will start as shortstop for the American League in the 94th annual MLB All-Star Game on July 16.

The former Morgan Academy star and Alabama’s Mr. Baseball of the 2019 season beat Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals in the fan vote to select the starters for the Midsummer Classic.

The starters for the MLB All-Star Game were announced on Wednesday evening.

Before Wednesday’s game, Henderson, midway through his second full major league season, had a .288 batting average, .383 on-base average and .600 slugging percentage. Henderson has hit 26 home runs in 84 games and his 74 runs are the most in the major leagues.

Henderson was named an All-Star for the first time and was the American League Rookie of the Year for the 2023 season.

The MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 16 at 7:00 p.m. CDT at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. FOX will televise the game.

The night before the All-Star Game, Henderson will participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby at the same stadium. ESPN and MLB Network will broadcast the Home Run Derby on July 15 at 7 p.m.

Joining Henderson in the American League starting lineup will be:

· Adley Rutschman, catcher of the Baltimore Orioles

· Vladimir Guerrero Jr., first baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays.

· Jose Altuve, second baseman of the Houston Astros

· Jose Ramirez, third baseman of the Cleveland Guardians

· New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge

· Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan

· New York Yankees outfielder Juan Soto

· Designated hitter of the Houston Astros, Yordan Alvarez

The starters in the National League include:

· Catcher William Contreras of the Milwaukee Brewers

· Bryce Harper, first baseman of the Philadelphia Phillies

· Ketel Marte, second baseman of the Arizona Diamondbacks

· Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner

· Alec Bohm, third baseman of the Philadelphia Phillies

· San Diego Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar

· San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr.

· Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich

· Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter, Shohei Ohtani

The pitchers and alternates — 23 players in total for each team — will be selected by player ballot and by the Commissioner’s Office. The selections will be announced Sunday at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN.
