2 dead after car-bus accident in Clay County, Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Two people were killed in a crash involving multiple vehicles and a school bus in Clay County, Missouri, Wednesday afternoon.

The accident was reported around 3:08 p.m. in the area of ​​Highways 92 and A between Kearney and Smithville.


According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, three vehicles were traveling westbound on Highway 92 when the first vehicle attempted to turn and the second vehicle swerved to avoid a collision and entered the eastbound lane, directly into the path of a school bus. That vehicle then struck a fourth vehicle traveling westbound.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said two passengers in the car that struck the school bus died at the scene.

There were 17 students and four adults on the school bus. Two students were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Other students were taken to Kearney to be reunited with their families.

The students belong to the Gallatin school district and were on their way home from Kansas City International Airport after a conference in Florida.

MSHP is leading the investigation into the crash.
