Former world champions experience much-needed success in Canada

If you were a professional rodeo fan between 2005 and 2015, you certainly knew the name Lindsay Sears. Fans were also very familiar with the barn name “Martha.” Just mentioning either name would spark a long conversation about how talented the duo was in the barrel racing arena.

Sears won the World Barrel Racing Championship in 2008 and 2011 and also won the average at the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Sears is back on the winning track, this time with one of Martha’s babies named SME One Of a Kind. The pair won last week’s Ponoka Stampede.

Sears remained solid in the first round, finishing in ninth place with a run of 17.58 seconds.

In the final, Sears crossed the finish line and stopped the clock at 17.70 seconds. This run was good enough for second place. Combined, these two performances gave Sears an overall average time of 35.28 seconds.

Ponoka hosts a Showdown Round where the top four finishers from the final round compete in a “Showdown” for bonus money. The round pays $7,500 – $3,750 – $2,250 – and $1,500. Sears put together her fastest run of the week, posting a run of 17.47 seconds to earn the $7,500 bonus.

In total, Sears and her home-grown superstar earned $14,346 for a week’s work in Ponoka. Martha would no doubt approve.

Another star on a mission was former tie-down roping world champion Haven Meged. He and his horse, affectionately known as “Smoke,” put together some outstanding runs and earned more than $20,000 for their efforts.

In round one, Meged finished second in 8.4 seconds, along with fellow tie-down roper Quade Hiatt, earning $3,355 each for their performance.

In round two, Shad “Money” Mayfield took the championship title with his 7.9-second run. Meged stayed solid and was just a tenth of a second off his first run when he threw his hands in the air at 8.5 seconds.

The Montana man finished the final round with an 8.3-second run to secure first place in the average. His 25.2-second time on three heads earned him $6,257 and the privilege of going last in the “Showdown Round.”

Meged was ready for the challenge. Winning required tying his fastest calf of the week, but Meged sealed the deal with his lightning-fast 7.8-second run.

With his $7,500 bonus in hand, the world champion left Ponoka with total winnings of $20,062.
