How hot did it get in Sonoma and Napa counties? And what’s next?

The heat wave that swept through the North Bay this week brought the highest temperatures of the year so far, according to the National Weather Service, and even set a decades-old record.

In Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties, maximum temperatures were reached around 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The hottest months were Cloverdale, Angwin and Ukiah with 42.3 degrees Celsius.

Peak temperatures in the region on Tuesday included:

  • Angwin: 109 degrees
  • Cloverdale: 109 degrees
  • Ukiah: 109 degrees
  • Healdsburg: 106 degrees
  • Santa Rosa: 106 degrees
  • Calistoga: 105 degrees
  • Monte Rio: 103 degrees
  • Sebastopol: 95 degrees
  • Napa: 105 degrees
  • Petaluma: 97 degrees

The Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport recorded a temperature of 106 degrees on July 2, a new record for the county. The previous record was 101 degrees, set on July 2, 2001.

For comparison: In the USA, temperatures of 104 degrees were measured in Tucson, Arizona, about 100 degrees in Houston, Texas, and 90 degrees in Miami, Florida. (In the northernmost part of Antarctica near the Drake Strait, however, it was 21 degrees.)

On Wednesday, temperatures cooled a little, but not much. The highest temperatures recorded at 3 p.m. were:

  • Angwin: 109 degrees
  • Cloverdale: 107 degrees
  • Healdsburg: 105 degrees
  • Santa Rosa: 103 degrees
  • Ukiah: 109 degrees
  • Calistoga: 105 degrees
  • Monte Rio: 99 degrees
  • Sebastopol: 93 degrees
  • Napa: 100 degrees
  • Petaluma: 102 degrees

The heat is expected to continue with some fluctuations throughout the rest of the week, but not enough to lift the heat warning, which was extended again Wednesday afternoon and remains in effect until July 10.

A hazard warning remains in effect for higher elevations in the North Bay until 5 a.m. Friday.
