Jason StathamThe newest action vehicle of 2024 The Beekeeperis now streaming on Prime Video and MGM+ six months after its premiere in theaters on January 12. After a very successful theatrical release, in which the film grossed over $152 million on a budget of $40 million, The Beekeeper was then released on VOD and digital platforms on January 30th, and then on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD in April. The Statham action film is now available to Prime Video subscribers and quickly became the second most watched film on the platform.

The Beekeeper follows a mysterious man named Adam Clay (Statham), a beekeeper who lives on the farm of a retired teacher named Eloise Parker. Clay leads a quiet life, spending most of the day in complete isolation working with bees. Unfortunately, Eloise is scammed by a phishing company and after they steal all her money, she decides to end her life.

After being cleared of suspicion, Clay decides to pursue the criminal organization that stole Eloise’s money. The quiet and seemingly harmless man is actually a retired agent from a larger organization, and Clay has the means to hunt down all those responsible for the scams. In his quest for justice, he learns that other “beekeepers” have been hired to stop him, as his target may be more powerful than he thought.

A surprising success

Critics have received the film better than expected, especially considering that Statham’s films are not usually critically acclaimed. On Rotten Tomatoes The Beekeeper holds a decent value of 71% on the Tomatometer and a outstanding 92% in the audience score. From our own Will Sayre’s review:

“Despite its overall formulaic nature – combined with the expected eye-rolling at Statham’s slapstick and silliness – you might just have fun at the movies, especially given the sitcom-like banter between agent Verona and her partner, as mentioned above. Plus, the devilishly handsome Statham finally puts on a nice suit in the third act, and you might not be able to take your eyes off him.”

Jason Statham and David Ayer from “The Beekeeper” are back for “Levon’s Trade” and the cast is now expanding to include several big names.

“The Beekeeper” is an action spectacle with Jason Statham as the main character

Director: David Ayer (Suicide Squad, Bright, End of the watch), The Beekeeper is a standard Jason Statham film where you shouldn’t ask too many questions about the plot or things that don’t really make sense. It has enough nerve-wracking scenes and well-thought-out stunts to make your day if you’re an action fan. If you can overlook a few inconsistencies, The Beekeeper is an entertaining film with one of Hollywood’s best action stars at the peak of his career.

It also has a secret weapon, an undercurrent of exaggerated silliness that just keeps getting funnier. Also noteworthy are the supporting roles of Jeremy Irons, Phylicia Rashad, Minnie Driver and Josh Hutcherson in one of the best interpretations of his usual characters. Check out our interview with Josh Hutcherson below:

The Beekeeper is anything but Statham’s show and is undoubtedly the actor’s best film in years. He must have had a good experience too, as he is reteaming with Ayer in 2025 for an action thriller called Levon’s Tradewritten by Sylvester Stallone. In MovieWeb’s interview with David Ayer, he said the following about working with Statham on The Beekeeper:

“Working with him, I really understood how he worked, what his kind of camera grammar was, and then bringing an A-game to the action. When I learned his action game, that was a plus. So I was kind of taught by him. And I learned a lot about action, stunts and acting, more than I already knew. He was just an incredible collaborator. And when you work with someone who just demands the best of you, you bring out the best in yourself.”
